Tohoshinki Is #1 On “Kōhaku Uta Gassen” Poll ~ Extraordinary Voting Margin Of 65.3%

Tohoshinki has won the #1 position on the popularity poll for “Kōhaku Uta Gassen”, vindicating their massive popularity in Japan.

At the closing of the popularity poll for singers who had appeared on the “62nd NHK Kōhaku Uta Gassen” on December 31st at 11:59 pm JST, Tohoshinki set a record of a close-to-majority winning margin of 49.7%, climbing to the #1 spot.

Because this poll only allows participation from within Japan itself, it is impossible for Korean fans and overseas fans to take part in voting. The poll also excludes duplicate votes. In such a situation, Tohoshinki still managed to garner an extraordinary voting margin of 65.3% to win the top spot. “Kōhaku Uta Gassen” is Japan’s biggest music festival, and the results of this poll is testament to the status of Tohoshinki, who has reigned supreme in Japan as top stars for many years.

On this day, the members of Tohoshinki appeared on stage in black and white outfits respectively and put up a performance of “Why? (Keep Your Head Down)”, which was released in January last year. After their performance had ended, both of them conveyed a “thank you” message to their fans.

Meanwhile, SNSD and Kara, who had appeared for the first time on “Kōhaku Uta Gassen”, were ranked #5 and #20 respectively on the same poll.

More On Kohaku: Kōhaku Uta Gassen(紅白歌合戦), more commonly known as simply Kōhaku, is an annual music show on New Year’s Eve produced by Japanese public broadcaster NHK. The show ends shortly before midnight.

Literally “Red and White Song Battle,” the program divides the most popular music artists of the year into competing teams of red and white. The “red” team or akagumi (赤組, 紅組) is composed of all female artists (or groups with female vocals), while the “white” team or shirogumi (白組) is all male (or groups with male vocals). The honor of performing on Kōhaku is strictly by invitation, so only the most successful J-Pop artists and enka singers can perform. In addition to the actual music performances, the costumes, hair-styles, makeup, dancing, and lighting are also important. Even today, a performance on Kōhaku is said to be a big highlight in a singer’s career because of the show’s large reach.
